PVA Support Filament: Dissolvable Supports Explained

Every printed support is a compromise. It has to be strong enough to hold the overhang and weak enough to snap off, and it always leaves a mark. On internal cavities, enclosed channels and delicate lattices, it may not be removable at all.

PVA removes the compromise. It is a water-soluble polymer: print the supports in PVA, drop the finished part in water, and they disappear completely.

What dissolvable supports unlock

Geometry you simply cannot print otherwise:

  • Enclosed internal cavities, where no tool could ever reach the support.
  • Internal channels and ducts that need to stay clear and smooth.
  • Delicate lattices and organic forms that would break during manual support removal.
  • Perfect overhang surfaces, because nothing is snapped away and no scarring is left behind.

PVA pairs particularly well with PLA. Their printing temperatures overlap comfortably, which is what makes the combination reliable on a dual-extruder machine.

EMBERFORM PVA at a glance

Diameter 1.75 mm (±0.03 mm)
Net weight 1 kg
Spool length ~340 m
Nozzle temperature 180-220 °C
Bed temperature 45-60 °C
Price $49 per spool

Requires a second extruder, used alongside your model material. Keep it extremely dry: PVA absorbs moisture faster than almost anything else, and must be stored sealed with desiccant at all times.

When it is worth the cost

PVA is the most expensive filament we stock, and it is consumed as waste, so it is not a default choice. It earns its price on complex multi-material prints, intricate models, and parts where the supported surface is the important one.

For ordinary overhangs on ordinary parts, normal breakaway supports in your model material remain the sensible option.

Working with PVA

  • Moisture discipline is everything. PVA left in open air becomes stringy and unprintable quickly. Sealed container, fresh desiccant, no exceptions.
  • Warm water dissolves faster. Still water works; gently agitated warm water works much faster.
  • Give it time. Thick support structures can take several hours. Changing the water part-way speeds things up as it saturates.
  • Do not pour heavily saturated PVA water down a narrow drain. Dilute it well.
