Polycarbonate is the material used for riot shields and bulletproof glazing. In filament form it keeps most of that character: extremely high impact strength, and heat resistance well beyond anything PLA or PETG can manage.
It is also the most demanding material on this list. PC+ needs high temperatures, a genuine enclosure, dry filament and excellent bed adhesion. Get any of those wrong and it warps off the plate.
When PC+ is the right call
Reach for it when the part has to survive conditions that would destroy anything else:
- Sustained heat. Where PETG softens and ASA is marginal, PC+ holds. Parts near motors, lighting, engine bays or in direct sustained sun.
- Impact. PC+ absorbs sudden shock better than any other common filament. It deforms and springs back where others shatter.
- Load-bearing end-use parts. When a printed part is genuinely doing a structural job and failure is expensive.
If your part does not face heat or impact, PC+ is the wrong choice. It costs more and prints harder than PETG for no benefit you would notice.
EMBERFORM PC+ at a glance
| Diameter | 1.75 mm (±0.03 mm) |
| Net weight | 1 kg |
| Spool length | ~340 m |
| Nozzle temperature | 235-260 °C |
| Bed temperature | 100-110 °C |
| Price | $40 per spool |
High temperatures and an enclosure are both required. Dry the filament before printing. Ensure strong bed adhesion, because PC+ generates significant warping force as it cools.
Applications
Functional prototypes, mechanical parts, housings and mounts, and anything exposed to heat or mechanical stress. It is also optically interesting: in thin sections PC can be near-transparent, though printed parts rarely achieve real clarity.
Making PC+ work
- Enclosure, heated if possible. PC+ shrinks hard as it cools. An open printer will warp large parts off the bed every time.
- Dry it. PC absorbs moisture readily, and wet PC prints cloudy, weak and full of bubbles.
- Bed adhesion is critical. High bed temperature plus adhesive. Brims help on anything with a small footprint.
- Fans off. Part cooling causes layer splitting in PC+.
- Check your hotend. Many stock hotends with PTFE liners cannot safely reach PC+ temperatures. You want an all-metal hotend.
