PA6 Nylon Print Settings for Gears and Moving Parts

There is a specific category of part that nothing else prints well: gears that mesh, hinges that cycle, bushings that rub, clips that get flexed a thousand times. PLA snaps. PETG wears. Carbon fibre composites are too brittle.

PA6 nylon is what that category is for. It is tough, wear-resistant, and slightly flexible under load, so it absorbs stress instead of accumulating cracks.

What makes nylon different

Most printed parts fail in one of two ways: they snap under sudden load, or they wear away under repeated contact. Nylon resists both.

  • Toughness. Nylon deforms before it breaks. A nylon gear tooth under overload bends and recovers where a PLA tooth shears off.
  • Wear resistance. This is nylon's signature property and the reason it is used for industrial bushings and gears. Surfaces that rub against each other last dramatically longer.
  • Self-lubrication. Nylon has a naturally low coefficient of friction, so meshing parts run smoothly without grease.
  • Chemical and heat resistance. It tolerates oils, fuels and solvents that would attack PLA or PETG.

If you want nylon's toughness with more stiffness, fibre-filled nylon is the usual step up. If you want stiffness without nylon's difficulty, see PLA CF.

Dry the filament thoroughly before printing. This is not optional advice with nylon. An enclosure is strongly recommended, and a glue or adhesive layer helps bed adhesion considerably.

What to print with it

Gears, bearings and bushings, hinges, living joints, brackets under load, jigs and fixtures, and functional end-use parts. It is the right answer whenever a part has to survive being used rather than just existing.

Moisture is the whole game

Nylon absorbs water from the air faster than any other common filament, and a spool left out overnight in humid coastal air can be unusable by morning. Wet nylon prints with visible steam, audible popping, a rough foamy surface, and drastically reduced strength.

  • Dry before every print, not just when the spool is new. 70-80 °C for 6-12 hours in a filament dryer or oven.
  • Print from a dry box if the print will run for more than a few hours.
  • Store sealed with fresh desiccant, always. Silica gel that has stopped changing colour is doing nothing.
  • If a nylon print comes out weak and foamy, the filament is wet. It is essentially never anything else.
