Wood PLA is PLA mixed with real wood fibre. That is not marketing language, and it has practical consequences: the print smells faintly of sawdust, it sands like softwood rather than gumming up the paper, and it takes wood stain.
It also does something no other filament does. The colour shifts with print temperature, which means you can control the finished tone from the slicer.
Temperature is a colour control
The wood fibre in the filament darkens as it gets hotter, in the same way toast does. Printing at the low end of the range produces a pale, blonde tone. Printing at the high end produces a deep, toasted brown. The range here is wide enough that the two ends look like different materials.
This opens up a genuinely unusual technique: set a temperature change partway up a print and get a deliberate two-tone piece from a single spool, with no filament swap and no painting.
It also means a temperature tower is worth printing before any piece you care about, purely as a colour swatch.
EMBERFORM PLA Wood at a glance
| Diameter | 1.75 mm (±0.03 mm) |
| Net weight | 1 kg |
| Spool length | ~340 m |
| Nozzle temperature | 200-250 °C |
| Bed temperature | 90-100 °C |
| Price | $18 per spool |
Use a 0.4 mm nozzle or larger to avoid clogs, and a hardened nozzle helps with the wood fibres. Vary print temperature deliberately to shift the wood tone.
What suits it
Décor, figurines, picture frames, coasters, rustic display pieces, and anything where you want a warm, organic material rather than an obviously plastic one. It is a display material rather than a structural one: the wood fibre interrupts the polymer, so it is somewhat weaker than plain PLA.
It is particularly effective on pieces that will be handled, because the surface texture feels like finished wood rather than plastic.
Finishing it like timber
- Use a larger nozzle. Wood fibre is the most clog-prone filler in common filaments. 0.4 mm is the practical minimum, and 0.6 mm is more comfortable.
- Sand it. Unlike plain PLA, which melts and smears under friction, wood PLA sands cleanly. Work up through the grits as you would with real wood.
- Stain it. Wood stain and wax both take, because there is real fibre at the surface to absorb them. Test on a scrap print first.
- Print a temperature tower first and keep it. It doubles as a colour chart for future prints.
