Silk PLA: How to Get the Glossiest Possible Prints

Silk PLA is the cheapest upgrade in 3D printing. It costs a little more than standard PLA and produces prints that look like they were finished by hand: glossy, light-catching, and convincingly not-plastic.

The catch is that the sheen is fragile. The same spool can produce a mirror finish or a dull, scuffed mess depending entirely on how you slice it.

Why silk looks different

Silk PLA contains additives that make the extruded strand reflective and slightly more elastic. That reflectivity only reads as gloss when the surface is smooth and continuous. Anything that interrupts the surface (aggressive cooling, visible seams, too many perimeters) scatters the light and kills the effect.

This is why silk rewards a completely different mindset to normal PLA. With standard PLA you optimise for dimensional accuracy. With silk you optimise for an uninterrupted surface.

EMBERFORM PLA Silk at a glance

Diameter 1.75 mm (±0.03 mm)
Net weight 1 kg
Spool length ~340 m
Nozzle temperature 200-220 °C
Bed temperature 50-80 °C
Price $15 per spool

Print at the hotter end of the range for the best sheen. Lower cooling also improves gloss: the slower the surface solidifies, the smoother it stays.

What it is for

Vases, statues, jewellery, gifts and anything decorative. Silk is a display material: it is no stronger than standard PLA, and the additives make it very slightly weaker. Do not use it for brackets.

Single-colour spools give a clean metallic look. Bi-colour and tri-colour spools shift as the print rises, and rainbow shifts continuously. Those are best on tall, simple geometry like vases, where the gradient has room to develop.

Settings that control the sheen

  • Reduce cooling. The single biggest factor. Try 30-50% instead of 100%.
  • Use single perimeters on vases. Spiral vase mode shows colour shifts at their best and removes seams entirely.
  • Slow down on outer walls. A slower outer perimeter lays a smoother, shinier surface.
  • Hide the seam. A visible z-seam is far more obvious on a glossy surface than a matte one. Use random or aligned-and-hidden seam placement.
